I had ordered the book from Amazon.com after hearing of David Foster Wallace's death. So instead of menacing the reader in the old Joycean way, Wallace chums it up whenever the technical stuff appears, acting like he really doesn't mean to discourage anyone. I read the first chapter and decided that I wasn't going to be able to get through it without a reader's guide.
